Basically, it's a UK free text messaging system that lets you send text messages to your friend's UK mobile phone. Fonetastic Free SMS promote their service via websites like TextMeFree.com (this website) as well as directly from their text messaging site

You have to register with Fonetastic. You also have to put up with advertising in the text messages you send (text messages from this site will contain the words: -- free sms via TextMeFree.com), and advertising on the websites you send from (have you noticed them yet! ;-) ). Yes. Just find text messaging sites that send free text messages to your country and you're laughing! :-)
